Chili Klaus & Psychiatry
Psychiatry and Chili Klaus
Over the years, I have received several inquiries from both staff and relatives in psychiatry who say that they use some of our chili balls as part of their distraction methods. A father has described that his son, who is hospitalized with mental challenges, uses chili balls in wind force 15 during periods when his thoughts become heavy. An employee at a private residence has said that they use chili balls as a short-term shift in focus when having difficult thoughts. A nurse from a psychiatric emergency department on Funen has mentioned that chili balls are part of a box of methods that are intended to give patients a sensory experience that can distract them in stressful situations. I have also personally met young people and adults in other contexts who have told me that they use chili balls in similar ways.
On an adult psychiatric ward at Aarhus University Hospital, the staff works with various forms of sensory-based distraction methods. These can be cold objects, scales, tactile objects or other tools. The staff has stated that they use different varieties of chili balls and Spicy candies depending on the situation and person. The strong taste requires full attention at the moment and therefore functions as a short distraction. It is not treatment or therapy, but a practical element that the staff uses in specific situations where a shift in focus may be relevant.
My original idea with the chili balls was to create a taste experience with licorice, chocolate and chili, as well as candies in different wind strengths. I had no idea that the products would later be used in psychiatric environments. The inquiries from both professionals and private individuals have provided insight into how strong sensory impressions are sometimes part of the work of dealing with difficult moments.
The use of the products takes place in psychiatry as part of the staff's own workflows and professional assessments. Our products are common foods that individual departments and individuals have chosen to include in their practice.
Products used in psychiatry:
Chili balls in different wind strengths. The chili is in the outermost part.
The Spicy series - candies in different wind strengths. The chili is placed inside a candy.
